When tiny canals within your tooth become infected, a dentist will clean and fill them and give the tooth either a filling or a crown. The procedure usually requires one to two visits (not including follow-up visits). The area around the tooth is numbed and you may be offered a mild sedative. All of the diseased pulp in the tooth is removed, and the canal is cleaned with an antiseptic solution and filled with a flexible plastic material. The tooth is temporized for a short period of time until a permanent crown is put into place.
